Senior Accountant (Full Cycle) – Kitsaki Vegetation Services
Under the direction of the Manager of Accounting and Administration, this position is primarily responsible for performing or supervising all aspects of the day to day accounting functions, financial and project reporting, budgeting and audit preparation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The senior accountant position is accountable for the presentation of financial and operational information of the company, including the production of periodic financial and project related reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risks, enhance the accuracy of the company’s financial results, prepare and file required government returns, and ensure that reported results comply with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprise (ASPE).
Accountabilities:
Management:
- Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
- Oversee the administration of agreements, including revenue agreements and outsourced/subcontracted functions ensuring that invoices are recorded correctly
- Oversee the accounting operations of divisions and projects, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures
Transactions:
- Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
- Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
- Ensure payroll is processed in a timely manner
- Ensure statutory remittances and reporting requirements are met (GST, PST, WCB)
- Ensure bank reconciliations are prepared promptly and reviewed for accuracy
- Ensure VISA reconciliations are prepared and reviewed for accuracy and coding
- Maintain the chart of accounts
- Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
- Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
Reporting:
- Issue timely and complete financial statements on a monthly basis
- Provide management with regular project financial progress reports
- Assist in the development and presentation of quarterly financial reports
- Assist in the preparation of year-end audit files and work with the auditors as required
- Provide management with regular operating financial reports for each project, each division and for the overall company
- Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations.
- Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
- Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts
- Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to General Manager
- Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for project job costing, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
Compliance:
- Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
- Comply with provincial and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings (GST, PST, WCB, ETC.)
Working Conditions:
- Primarily in an office environment located in Saskatoon. Will be required to travel regularly to the La Ronge approximately two to three days a month. Periodic weekend or evening work is expected.
Qualifications:
- The successful candidate must have at least three years of relevant experience, and having a professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) would be considered an asset.
- Degree or certificate in accounting with a good understanding of ASPE.
- Knowledge of terminology and practices, applicable federal and provincial laws, and industry regulations pertaining to financial administration of businesses. Experience in construction project accounting would be an asset.
- Knowledge and experience of accounting systems and other construction industry applications that support the accounting system would be an asset.
- Experience with project reporting and cost allocations
- Demonstrated ability working with Microsoft applications including: Excel, Word.
- Experience with transitioning from one accounting system to another
- Demonstrated ability to interpret, and make decisions in accordance with, policies and procedures and labour legislation.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure and prioritize workload under tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated positive, team oriented attitude.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a professional and mature manner in a diverse and busy office.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
