Controller – Kitsaki Vegetation Services

Reporting to the General Manager, this position is primarily responsible for performing or supervising all aspects of the day-to-day accounting functions, maintaining an adequate system of accounting records and controls, financial reporting that complies with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprise (ASPE), project reporting, budgeting and audit preparation.

Management:

  • Supervise the accounting operations, including AR, AP and payroll;
  • Provide guidance, mentorship and support for effective accounting processes and best practices;
  • Develop and nurture an effective and productive accounting and administrative team;
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures;
  • Oversee the administration of agreements, including revenue agreements and outsourced/subcontracted functions;
  • Lead the accounting and administrative team, including an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives;
  • Oversee the accounting operations of divisions and projects;
  • Streamline processes and procedures for improving operational efficiency of financial reporting and production activity.

Transactions:

  • Ensure timely payment of accounts payable;
  • Ensure accurate and timely invoicing in accordance with customer requirements;
  • Ensure prompt collection of accounts receivable;
  • Ensure timely processing of payroll;
  • Ensure statutory remittances and reporting requirements are met;
  • Ensure bank reconciliations are prepared promptly and reviewed for accuracy;
  • Maintain the chart of accounts;
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system;
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions.

Reporting:

  • Issue timely and complete financial statements;
  • Oversee the financial reporting process, including month-end, quarter-end and year-end;
  • Lead in the preparation of the year-end audit process and liaise with external auditors as required;
  • Provide management with regular operating financial reports for each project, each division and for the overall company;
  • Recommend benchmarks for measuring company performance;
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics;
  • Prepare annual budget and forecasts;
  • Analyze variances from the budget and report significant issues to General Manager;
  • Provide financial analyses for project job costing, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.

Compliance:

  • Coordinate information to external auditors for the annual audit;
  • Comply with provincial and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings (GST, PST, WCB, etc.).

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily in an office environment. Will be required to travel regularly to the La Ronge office.
  • Occasional weekend or evening work may be required.

Supervises:

  • Accounting and administrative staff, including a Senior Accounting Clerk and Accounting Technician, based in Saskatoon and La Ronge, SK.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience;
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA);
  • Degree or certificate in accounting with a good understanding of ASPE;
  • Knowledge of financial administration laws and regulations;
  • Experience in construction project accounting preferred;
  • Familiarity with accounting systems and construction industry applications;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Excel, Word);
  • Experience with project reporting and cost allocations;
  • Ability to interpret, and make decisions in accordance with, policies and procedures and labour legislation;
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure and prioritize workload under tight deadlines;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).

Compensation:

  • Competitive base salary based on qualifications and market rates ($90,000 to $110,000);
